Clyde Martin Reed was born 9 October 1871 in Champaign County, Illinois, the son of Martin Van Buren and Mary Adelaid Reed. His family moved to Labette County, Kansas in 1875, where Reed received his education, including a teacher's certificate. In 1891 he married Minnie E. Hart and they had seven children who survived to adulthood. Reed worked for the government much of his life, when not running the Parsons Sun newspaper.
